This move has crammed my family together. We are blessed. We are cozy.
(Sometimes a bit too cozy!)

Today after speaking with my Mom and while my son was napping-I converted my office space into a bedroom for Barrack. This way, he has his very own space.

(My office will be in the bedroom. This kind of works out as I can just pass out after writing papers!)

I can't wait for him to see it! I have been collecting sports things for his big boy room and it all came together really nicely!

I found these awesome beach balls at Wal-mart for less than a dollar a piece! I took some string, tied the tube and attached to the wall. I was originally going to hang them from the ceiling, but the ceilings are kind of low here. This idea worked very well:

Are you asking yourself why my son hasn't any shoes?
He had shoes yesterday morning during rehearsal and today right before the program started.s the music began for the program to start, Bear did a nice job walking to the stage.And then he spotted us.His mom and dad...grandparents from both sides...uncles. And decided he didn't want to go on.I made him sit up there-ran to get a toy to console him, even.He was not having it! He threw the toy off of the stage and began to remove his socks and shoes-which also went off of the stage.
This whole thing ended with one frustrated Mom and an apologetic (kind of) toddler in the back of the Church watching the rest of the kids perform.
He did join the kids at the end for cookies in the gym...

Independence in Fashion
Clothing was sexy and spending was frivolous. The nineteen twenties were critical years in the advancement of women’s rights. Women had confidence like never before. This was shown in clothing choices and recreation. While fashion and women’s rights are linked throughout history, the nineteen twenties especially displayed the correlation between women’s new confidence in dress, public opposition to said dress, a new display of sexual confidence and what women looked like to others as a result.
Women throughout history have been pleasing to men’s eyes. Young women of the 1920s wished to look fabulous for themselves. Fashion was no longer about looking good for a man. Prior to women’s rights, ladies were taught at a young age to always look their best and speak when spoken to. In times past, the number one objective for most adolescent women was to acquire a husband. When women earned the right to vote, much of this changed. Around and after World War One, young women began to challenge what they had been taught was valuable and appropriate. This led to the quest for Women’s rights and an overhaul in women’s fashion, which birthed the flapper. The flapper was a new kind of woman. Fashionable and slim, she spoke her mind and partied to excess She smoked often and socialized in a promiscuous way (DiPaolo). While many parents encouraged their daughters to dress in a more modest way, Flappers deemed long skirts and ruffles old fashioned. These ladies favored shorter hemlines and extravagant fabrics. Women’s rights allowed a revolution not only in young ladies’ behavior, but in the clothing industry as well.
Citizens were shocked to see young ladies behave in this manner. Much of the public deemed it unacceptable. In the United States, parents in every home feared their daughters would don extravagant dresses and stay out until all hours of the night with unsuitable men.
By nineteen twenty five, dresses were the shortest in history- an act of the devil,
some thought. There was an international outcry to protect the moral code; here
and there, campaigns were launched to save the future generation from chaos and destruction. (Herald 28)
Many simply recognized this new way of dress and socializing as a sign of the times. As women gained rights, naturally, they expected freedom in the way they adorned themselves and spent their free time. This new era of raised hemlines would not have gained such opposition from the public if eased into more responsibly.
Responsible young women were not taught or expected to publicly flirt with the opposite sex. Certainly, sex was reserved for young ladies’ wedding nights. As an equal to men, Flappers flaunted their sexuality with pride. “Traditionally, women were taught to restrain their sexual impulses and conform to the modest standards of dress and behavior (Bodenner). After winning the right to vote, women also earned the right to flirt and coerce as their men did. Parents felt their daughters were rebelling by acting like harlots. Flappers simply wanted to experience the sexual high they had so long desired. The celebration of women’s rights came with a newly found sexual freedom.
While Flappers stood for independence, the public felt that these young ladies contributed nothing to society. The Flapper liked to shop, drink, smoke and be with men. This was a new concept when it came to the behavior of young ladies. United States citizens questioned whether or not Flappers would settle down and have a family. Before women gained the right to vote, their job was to be at home and take care of her husband and children. The notion of a housewife was outdated. Many argued the Flapper did not value family and degraded women everywhere, even setting them back when it came to how men viewed and respected them. Flappers did not care what others thought of them, they simply wanted to have a good time. If they worked, the average Flapper would spend up to forty six percent of her earnings on clothing, liquor, smokes and other frivolous things (DiPaolo). U.S. citizens wondered how these acts contributed to the community. Young women of the nineteen twenties were finally equal to men and could spend their money how they pleased. They wished to participate in the things they saw the men of the world participating in. Flappers realized that they did not have to be married at eighteen. The public opposed this new way of thinking because it seemed that after women gained the right to vote, they chose to publicly behave in a degrading way.
When women of the twenties gained their right to vote, they gained their independence in fashion as well. Flappers wished to wear their skirts with a more risqué hem and socialize as men did. Although they received disapproval from their audience, Flappers expressed their sexuality without apology. Wanting to settle with a husband and children with a beautifully kept house was no longer the focus of happy women. This new concept combined with unconventional actions caused the world to think young women had become irresponsible and lacking any contributions to society. Upon gaining the right to vote and an equal status to their men, Flappers debunked tradition and wore risqué and extravagant fashions. This fashion was an expression of the freedom the young ladies of the nineteen twenties felt.

Unrealistic Expectations
For many Americans, magazines provide hours of entertainment. While magazines are a plethora of information and fun, they can also be depressingly unrealistic. Magazine companies and their advertisers stretch the visual truth of their model’s appearances. Digitally altering models featured in magazine advertisements should be illegal because the altered images often practices false advertising, promotes unrealistic expectations about body image and encourages unhealthy lifestyle choices.
Magazine advertisements use false advertising to portray health and beauty products. These advertisements rely on human models. Advertising companies manipulate these model’s bodies to enhance the appeal of their products. Perhaps one of the most relevant examples of false advertising through a beauty advertisement is Oil of Olay’s Twiggy campaign. Recently, the United Kingdom banned an advertisement for the beauty company’s age rejuvenation cream because Oil of Olay digitally altered the appearance of their model.
In August, British lawmakers called for a ban on the digitally altered ads, suggesting they mislead the public. And, in the ensuing months, the U.K's Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) received hundreds of complaints from the public, claiming the Olay images were "socially irresponsible" and could have a "negative impact on people's perceptions of their own body image, " Romolini
The United Kingdom was right to ban Oil of Olay’s misleading advertisement. Some might suggest beauty advertisements use digital enhancements to eliminate camera induced problems. This is a poor excuse. The way a light hits a model does not have a bearing on the way a products works. The digital alterations in the Oil of Olay and many other campaigns were to deceive the audience into thinking the companies’ skin product could completely eliminate wrinkles. Had the product done what it was supposed to, the results would have been displayed without the help of a computer program. Digital alterations in advertisements should be illegal because a good product will speak for itself.
Many Americans want to change their bodies. Viewing models in fitness and fashion advertisements makes the average person feel as if their body does not measure up to that advertisement’s impossible standards. Digital alterations run rampant in magazine advertisements. These enhancements range from altering a model’s hair color to altering a model’s hip size. Citizens do not realize these proportions are not normal and will never be attained naturally.
The issue is that unrealistic imagery is set next to text telling consumers that this is what they should look like or this is what they need to buy to look like that. In the end it is the consumer who really needs to realize that it is a fantasy world they are looking at and that these idealistic images were created to make them buy unnecessary products so companies can make more money. As Bankoff admits, the advertising industry plays a major role in setting unrealistic expectations for body image among Americans. Bankoff also informs readers that consumers are responsible for realizing digitally altered advertisements are fantasies. This would be a plausible argument, but the public has no way of knowing which articles are altered and which are not. Instead of creating an unrealistic fantasy, advertisers should promote natural beauty. The author would purchase more from advertisers who showcased real people of all shapes and sizes. Beauty is not perfect, but flawed. For example, the model Twiggy was an inspiration to many women of her time due to her unique (and natural) features. This ideal holds true. Digitally altered images skew body image expectations.
Perhaps the most unsettling results of digitally altered images are the sicknesses they encourage. Americans fall victim to such diseases as depression, anorexia and bulimia as they try to attain digitally altered bodies. Noel Lawrence comments “While these changes may appear harmless at first blush, feminist scholars have argued that these depictions of the female body create an unrealistic image of “normal” femininity in adolescents stating that eating disorders and other forms of body-image anxiety may result.” As Lawrence points out, even small digital alterations of the human body can humans to form body image disorders. Some may argue advertisers are simply mirroring existing trends in society (Further Health) This thought lacks responsibility. It is not the job of advertisers to glamorize harmful lifestyle choices. Others might argue that models featured have worked hard to look as well as they do. As hard as a person may work, they will never attain proportions given by digital altering. Advertisers do not encourage naturally fit bodies, but sickly ones. Digitally altering photographs encourages unhealthy acts in human beings.
Digitally altered advertisements are an epidemic. These advertisements falsely promote products. They make humans feel as if the altered pictures are normal and promote unrealistic body expectations. Digitally altered advertisements encourage unhealthy lifestyle choices and strip away the natural beauty of the human form. People may feel helpless when looking at these photographs. Fortunately, there are many actions that can be taken to put a stop to the digital alteration of magazines and their articles. Magazine readers should write to editors and advertisers informing them of the dangers of digitally altering models. Readers should speak about this issue to friends and family, reminding themselves and others that these images are unnatural and unhealthy. Finally, as an extreme but effective measure, readers can choose to simply not purchase magazines or products that features digitally altered models. Digitally altered images are not healthy. It is imperative that the public reminds advertisers that skewed beauty images do nothing but harm society.

Bear's First Day of Preschool.

Life is zooming by quickly.
My husband got a job and I made the decision to enroll my son in a local preschool.
It is part time-so he can have educated social play and I can focus on school without feeling that I am ignoring my child :)

Good plan.

After he was enrolled, we made the trip to our local Wal-Mart to get a "Toy Story 3" lunch bag.

(Of course I went back to get the backpack for my little student!)

Barrack went to school at 7:15, I was out by 7:25.
I called to check on him around 11am. His teacher said he was doing very well, especially since it was his first day. She said he didn't care for the free swim lessons offered and expressed he missed me at a point-but was having a great time.

When my husband picked him up at 4:30pm, He was crying because he didn't want to leave. Barrack says he wants to go back on Monday :)

I am happy it is working out...really happy!

I remember riding Sandy the Mechanical horse at Meijer :) It means a lot that my son can enjoy grocery store horsey rides, too.
I love that it is still only one cent to ride. That is a penny well spent.

(Add the fact that kids under 12 can get a free cookie at the Bakery and you have yourselves a family outing!)

I spent the evening at the fair. I worshiped with my Church and then walked around with friends. It was an amazing time!

At first, my son was going to attend with me. After much arguing, we headed on our way only for me to find my munchkin fast asleep in his carseat. I drove him back home and enjoyed the rest of my evening :)

Today I took my MTTC. MTTC is basically a test for future teachers to "make sure they aren't total mongoloids." (Thank you, Noah and Molly!)
When I was done, I felt pretty accomplished and rewarded myself with a trip to Goodwill. Well, it should have been a reward for me, but I got Barrack cowboy boots, instead.
I decided to go to the mall to search for a feather extension (clip in) I saw my favorite consignment shop owner wearing. Claire's was out of all but the blue feathers. The sales person told me that Fantastic Sams-a local hair salon- was putting them in for ten dollars. I didn't really want one in my hair for a long time, but I figured ten dollars was pretty reasonable so I went anyway.
So......I got to the salon and told the stylist I was considering a feather extension. She laughed. I asked her if everyone was getting them and told her which college I was going to.
"Everybody" at my college has them :(
Needless to say, I opted out of the feather extension trend.
Maybe I will get one when they go out of style-Vintage?

I believe the reason I love fall/winter fashion is because of Gossip Girl's Blair Waldorf. Her character's style is a big inspiration to my personal style. When a chill hits the air, I break out my blazers and tights!

As for hair? Well, I vow to do more than the "last minute bun."
I will certainly be looking at this post from Glamour.com for ideas.

I have been reading a book regarding our First Lady's style. I am in love with Michelle Obama's taste in fashion. I love that she is conservative (as she should be) and isn't afraid to be herself. I will never forget how excited I was when (grocery shopping at Meijer) I saw her on the cover of Glamour magazine.
